The 45-year-old Hobeika was killed in a bomb explosion January 24, 2002 near his home in Hazmeih, Lebanon, near Beirut. The bomb was planted in a parked car and was detonated by remote control as Hobeika drove past, killing Hobeika, his three bodyguards and wounding six others. Hobeika intended to testify as a key witness in a lawsuit pending in a Belgian court against Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon. The lawsuit charges Sharon was responsible for the massacre of hundreds of civilians at Sabra and Shatila Palestinian refugee camps during the 1982 Israeli invasion of Lebanon.
